POZNAN – Poznan in Poland hosted the four-day FDI Annual World Dental Congress (FDI AWDC) began here on Wednesday (Sept 7) to review and discuss the advancement of oral health, oral health care and all other subjects for the advancement of the World Dental Federation’s objectives.

Dr Maciej Hamankiewicz, President of the Supreme Medical Council of the Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists was the guest of honour, opening addresses were delivered by Prof. Bartłomiej W. Loster, President of the Polish Dental Society, and Mayor of Poznań Jacek Jaśkowiak, while the FDI President Dr Patrick Hescot welcomed the participants of the Congress.

Poland’s Minister of Health Dr Konstanty Radziwiłł highlighted the role of the AWDC in providing dental practitioners with an opportunity to exchange information and current dental knowledge,

In his welcome address, Dr Patrick Hescot the FDI president invited the international participants to widen their horizons in dentistry by immersing themselves in the AWDC’s vast array of scientific sessions.

The FDI AWDC’s inaugural day’s hot topic was ‘The global strategy and teamwork for periodontal health and overall health’. It was of special relevance to people interested in the FDI initiative the ‘Global Periodontal Health Project’ (GPH), launched in late 2015.

The major events of the Congress included scientific programme, General Assembly, FDI’s business meetings, World Dental Parliament, World Oral Forum, World Dental Exhibition and social programmes while presented topics are: FDI Vision 2020, Green Dentistry and sustainable development and Caries – a silent epidemic.

A 25-member strong delegation, led by Pakistan Dental Association’s (PDA) President, Dr. Saqib Rashid, is representing the country in the FDI’s Congress.

Earlier the FDI President, Dr Patrick Hescot, in his welcome message, said that this is a good time that the AWDC in Poznan will highlight some of the events that will make 2016 yet another winner for FDI – and an even more rewarding experience for members and other participants.

“In the annals of FDI history, the World Oral Health Forum is something of a parvenu because it started life only four years ago during the AWDC in Hong Kong, taking place within the context of the World Dental Parliament,” he said, adding that it was derived from the concept of the Davos World Economic Forum as a means of bringing together key opinion leaders in the field.

“Initially, it was open only to FDI member delegates and discussion focused on the newly-published Vision 2020. Since that first session both the concept and Vision 2020 have moved forward.

“This year’s Forum is focused on international public affairs as they pertain to the dental profession,” he added.

He encouraged members and other participants to keep an eye out for FDI’s `Hot Topic’ sessions: they mark the evolution of dentistry and its response to new realities.

Earlier, he thanked the distinguished organizing committee comprising both the Polish Dental Society and the Supreme Medical Council of the Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists, under the honorary patronage of the Supreme Medical Chamber of Poland.

The FDI AWDC’s Exhibition is being held at National Pavilions where smaller companies which traditionally not exhibit at such events, will have the opportunity to explore, with limited risks, a new market.
