NEW YORK: A recent investigation by CBS News and KFF Health News has revealed a troubling trend in the U.S. dental industry: some dentists are extracting healthy teeth to promote dental implants, prioritizing profit over patient care.
The report, supported by interviews with experts and victims, highlighted cases like Becky Carroll, who suffered severe complications from unnecessary implant procedures. Critics argue these practices violate ethical standards and erode patient trust.
The American Association of Endodontists (AAE) condemned the trend, urging practitioners to prioritize natural tooth preservation and warning patients about the risks of irreversible procedures. “Every patient deserves comprehensive information about treatment options,” the AAE emphasized.
Implant procedures, often costing thousands of dollars and not covered by insurance, have surged in popularity. In 2022 alone, over 3.7 million implants were sold in the U.S., fueled by rising private equity investments in dental chains.
Experts warn of significant risks, including surgery complications, jawbone damage, and limited future treatment options. Patients are encouraged to seek second opinions and verify their dentist’s qualifications before undergoing such procedures.
The findings have sparked national conversations about dental ethics and patient education, urging systemic reforms to safeguard oral health.
