KARACHI: Second-year BDS students from the Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine (AIDM) gained hands-on experience in community dentistry by conducting oral health screenings and awareness activities for schoolchildren at S.S. Public School.
Organised by the Department of Community Dentistry, the outreach programme was designed to connect classroom-based dental education with practical community care. The students conducted dental checkups under the supervision of faculty members, gaining experience in assessing children's oral health in a school setting.
The programme was led by Dr Amir Akbar Shaikh, associate professor and head of the Department of Community Dentistry. Demonstrators Dr Nikita Bodani, Dr Fatima Jafery, Dr Danial Ahmed and Dr Zain Jabbar supported the students during the screening activity.
Alongside the dental examinations, the students conducted oral health education sessions for the children. The sessions focused on proper tooth-brushing techniques, regular brushing, maintaining oral hygiene and the importance of preventing dental disease through healthy daily habits.
The school-based approach allowed students to work directly with children while developing skills in clinical screening, communication and oral health education. It also gave them exposure to the broader preventive role of dentistry, where early awareness and education can help reduce the risk of oral disease.
The programme was held at S.S. Public School, a charity-based educational institution, reflecting the community-oriented focus of the Department of Community Dentistry.
Community-based activities form an important part of dental education by allowing students to understand oral health needs outside the conventional clinical environment. School outreach programmes, in particular, can provide opportunities to promote preventive practices among children while helping future dentists develop an understanding of community oral health.
For AIDM students, the visit combined practical learning with direct engagement with the community, giving them an opportunity to apply their developing dental knowledge while promoting basic oral health practices among schoolchildren.
