KARACHI: A committee has been constituted by University of Karachi Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi to complete legal formalities and other prerequisites for establishing KU's medical college.
Led by Convener Prof Dr Faiyaz H M Vaid, the committee comprises Prof Dr Fareeda Islam, Prof Dr Iqbal Azhar, Prof Dr Basit Ansari, Dr Akmal Waheed, and Prof Dr Farhat Hussain Jaffery from the Karachi Medical and Dental College.
Prof Iraqi said that KU is contacting philanthropists and organisations to establish the teaching hospital for the proposed medical college and efforts are on to complete this project at the earliest.
The KU VC said this during a ceremony held to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
with the National Institute of Kidney and Urological Diseases Hospital, a project of the Kidney Foundation for provision of medical facilities, including emergency, cardiac, diagnostic, outpatient department, and radiological services to the varsity’s faculty, staff and their families.
Prof Iraqi also announced that the KU will start admissions to the faculty of medicine in the upcoming academic year.
He said medical classes will be conducted on the KU campus in collaboration with various hospitals to fulfill the requirements for completion of medical degree until the university establishes its own hospital.
The VC said prominent social worker and philanthropist Dr Nadira Panjwani has also offered assistance in building a hospital on the KU campus.
KU’s Senior Medical Officer Dr Wafa Altaf and The Kidney Foundation Director/Chief Executive Officer Dr Sakina Batool Naqvi signed the MoU on behalf of their respective institutions.
On the occasion, Dr Batool highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance and expand services at the hospital.
