KARACHI: The country has registered 9,284 new HIV patients this year, while some 900 to 1,000 new cases are emerging in Pakistan every month. These alarming figures were shared by the Federal Ministry of Health, adding that earlier in 2022, more than 10,000 HIV cases were reported.
According to the ministry, most of the HIV cases are being reported from Punjab and Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Health ministry officials say that around 40 to 50 new cases are being reported every month from Islamabad and its surrounding areas, besides Kashmir.
The main causes of the HIV spread include inadequate measures to check blood transfusion through substandard blood banks, sharing of needles by drug addicts, and unsafe sex.
Given this alarming situation, there is an urgent need for increasing HIV screening in the country.
