ISLAMABAD: The Senate Sub-Committee on National Health has urged the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) to take strict action against medical and dental colleges involved in overcharging students.

The recommendations came during a meeting of the Senate Sub-Standing Committee on National Health, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan. The session was attended by committee members, the Special Secretary of the Ministry of National Health, PMDC President Prof. Rizwan Taj, and Registrar Dr. Shaista Faisal.

Briefing the sub-committee, the Special Secretary, Ministry of Health, emphasized that colleges cannot raise fees at the time of admission. "Letters have been issued to 121 medical colleges regarding fee violations. Action will be taken against institutions found guilty of charging excessive fees," he stated, adding that PMDC acts as the regulatory authority and students should report overcharging to the council.

However, Senator Palwasha Khan highlighted a critical barrier, noting that many students hesitate to file complaints due to fears of retaliation.

The sub-committee recommended the PMDC exercise its regulatory authority to address fee-related issues. Senator Palwasha Khan assured the committee's support if legislative amendments are required to strengthen PMDC's enforcement powers.

This development marks a significant step toward greater transparency and affordability in medical and dental education across Pakistan.
