Tharparkar dominates Sindh MDCAT top ranks as Karachi makes broad merit gains

KARACHI: Tharparkar has recorded a notable showing in Sindh’s Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) results, producing five candidates among the province’s top 20 and 12 among the top 50, while Karachi secured 18 places in the top 100.

The Tharparkar candidates among the top 20 scored between 176 and 179 marks out of 180, placing the district prominently among Sindh’s highest-scoring candidates.

With only 1,027 candidates appearing from Tharparkar, the district’s representation in the upper end of the merit list stands out. Its 12 candidates in the top 50 account for nearly one-quarter of all positions in that bracket.

Karachi, which had a much larger candidate pool, recorded seven candidates among the top 50, 18 in the top 100, 37 in the top 200, 111 in the top 500 and 210 in the top 1,000.

The contrasting results show two distinct patterns in the province’s MDCAT performance: Tharparkar produced a particularly high concentration of candidates at the top of the merit list, while Karachi recorded substantial representation across the wider range of high-ranking positions.

Of the 1,027 candidates who appeared from Tharparkar, 613 passed the examination, giving the district a reported pass rate of 59.7%.

Karachi had the largest candidate pool among the figures available, with 9,505 candidates appearing and 5,492 passing, for a reported pass rate of 57.8%.

Karachi East recorded the highest pass rate among the district-level figures cited, at 62%, followed by Karachi Central at 59.9% and Tharparkar at 59.7%.

Across Sindh, 33,336 candidates appeared for the MDCAT, while 16,507 passed, resulting in an overall reported pass rate of about 49.5%.

Other districts also recorded substantial numbers of successful candidates. Larkana had 623 successful candidates out of 1,410, Mirpurkhas 571 out of 1,262, Sukkur 503 out of 984 and Hyderabad 652 out of 1,611.

Khairpur recorded 970 successful candidates from 2,189, while Dadu had 669 successful candidates out of 1,441. Shaheed Benazirabad recorded 630 passes from 1,485 candidates, and Thatta had 181 successful candidates among 398 who appeared.

For MBBS admissions, the passing threshold was 99 marks out of 180. However, qualifying the MDCAT does not by itself secure admission to a medical or dental college.

Candidates must compete on the basis of the applicable admission merit formula, available seats and institutional admission criteria. With thousands of candidates qualifying against a limited number of highly sought-after public-sector MBBS and BDS seats, competition is expected to remain intense.

The MDCAT results now shift attention to the next stage of the admission process, with candidates awaiting merit calculations and admission lists that will determine their prospects for securing medical and dental college seats across Sindh.
