KARACHI: Karachi played host to the 58th convocation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS), where nearly 700 fellows and an additional 100 new college members were honored for their contributions to the medical field. However, less than 5% of these awards were conferred upon dental surgery professionals, sparking a discussion on the current mindset of dental professionals regarding postgraduate specialization.

The disparity in award distribution raises important questions about the commitment to advanced dental education and research. As the quality of treatment and academic excellence can only be elevated through specialization, it is crucial that both young and seasoned dental professionals embrace opportunities for postgraduate education. Just as the medical field benefitted from increased specialization decades ago, the dental sector must also develop a robust framework where general practitioners act as essential links between patients and specialists, enhancing public awareness about the diverse specialties within dentistry and improving the overall quality of care.

Dr. Muhammad Maaz stands as a shining example of excellence in dental education and practice. A proud graduate of Jinnah Medical and Dental College, Dr. Maaz further honed his skills during a four-year residency at AKUH under the guidance of renowned mentors, Dr. Mubassar Fida and Dr. Rashna Sukhia. Now an Assistant Professor at Bahria University of Health Science's Karachi and a consultant orthodontist at various private clinics, he has garnered international recognition through multiple research publications. Beyond his academic and clinical achievements, Dr. Maaz also channels his creative spirit as a professional musician and music producer for games, and actively contributes to community art events across the city.

The convocation not only celebrated medical excellence but also highlighted the need for greater integration of dental specialists in advanced academic and clinical practice. As the dental profession evolves, fostering a culture of continuous learning and specialization will be key to enhancing treatment quality and research within the field.
