KARACHI: The Department of Community Dentistry at the Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine (AIDM) successfully organized a hands-on Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) Workshop designed to strengthen the clinical proficiency of BDS students. The workshop aimed to improve students’ understanding and practical ability in minimally invasive restorative dentistry, a cornerstone of community-based oral healthcare programs.

The session was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Amir Akhbar Shaikh, Head of the Department, and Dr. Naseer Ahmed, Assistant Professor, with active participation from demonstrators Dr. Nikita Bodani, Dr. Anum Ilyas, and Dr. Alkesh Kammal.

Hands-on training for practical skill enhancement

Faculty members provided stepwise guidance and live demonstrations on the instruments used in ART, including the excavator, mixing spatula, applicator, and plastic filling instrument. Participants observed detailed demonstrations of Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) mixing and placement, with emphasis on correct handling, manipulation, and adaptation techniques critical to successful restorations.

After the demonstration, students performed the procedure themselves under close faculty supervision. This interactive and guided practice allowed participants to apply theoretical knowledge in a controlled, supportive clinical setting, ensuring they gained confidence in performing atraumatic restorative treatments independently.

Integrating theory and practice in community dentistry

The Atraumatic Restorative Treatment Workshop successfully bridged the gap between classroom learning and clinical application, enabling students to understand the importance of ART as an essential component of community dentistry. The initiative reflects AIDM’s continued commitment to enhancing dental education through experiential learning, empowering future dental professionals with skills aligned with global preventive dentistry standards.
