KARACHI: The Department of Community Dentistry at Baqai Dental College recently organised a practical workshop for 2nd-year BDS students, focusing on the minimally invasive 'Atraumatic Restorative Treatment' (ART) -- the technique involving the use of hand tools to remove carious tooth tissues and restore cavities.
Led by Dr Mehwish Bano, the workshop commenced with a comprehensive lecture that elucidated the core concepts of ART. Dr Bano guided the students through the process of identifying suitable teeth for the treatment and outlined rules for its successful application. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining correct body posture and optimal positioning of the dental chair, the lecture provided a thorough understanding of the technique.
Following the lecture, students were directed to the phantom head lab for hands-on practice, where a demonstration was given on correct chair positioning for both the operator and assistant. Subsequently, a step-by-step demonstration of the ART procedure was conducted, allowing students to practice the technique individually under the supervision of esteemed faculty members, including Prof Dr Asghar Ali Shigri, Dr Sumreen Mahzar, Dr Mehwish Bano, and Dr Wajiha Anzar.
The workshop concluded with a memorable group photo capturing the collaborative spirit of the event. This hands-on experience is expected to empower students with practical skills that will prove invaluable in their future dental practice.
