KARACHI: In an effort to strengthen preventive healthcare and promote early oral hygiene habits among children, Baqai Dental College recently organized an academic field visit to Beacon Light Academy, engaging students from kindergarten to grade five in a comprehensive oral health awareness initiative.
The activity, conducted by the Department of Community Dentistry, was designed for second-year BDS students to provide them with early exposure to community-based dental practice. The visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application by placing future dentists in direct interaction with young students outside traditional clinical settings.
During the visit, dental students carried out basic oral screenings to identify common dental concerns among children. At the same time, they offered guidance on maintaining proper oral hygiene, emphasizing the importance of preventive care from an early age. Faculty members supervised the exercise to ensure both academic quality and effective community engagement.
A key component of the outreach was an interactive oral health education session. Using dental models, students demonstrated correct tooth brushing techniques and explained essential hygiene practices in a simple and engaging manner. The session encouraged active participation, helping children better understand and adopt healthy habits.
According to organizers, the initiative was structured around specific learning and community objectives. These included improving students’ clinical screening abilities, strengthening their communication skills, and promoting positive oral health behavior among children through practical demonstrations.
The field visit reflects a growing focus within dental education on preventive care and community involvement. By introducing dental students to public health settings early in their training, institutions aim to develop professionals who are not only clinically competent but also socially responsible.
Healthcare experts have long highlighted the need for greater awareness of preventive dentistry in Pakistan, particularly among younger populations. School-based initiatives such as this are increasingly being seen as an effective approach to addressing that gap.
Officials at Baqai Dental College noted that such outreach programs form an integral part of their academic framework, combining experiential learning with public health impact. The initiative, they said, contributes both to the professional development of students and to the broader goal of improving oral health awareness in the community.
By taking dental education beyond clinics and into classrooms, the program underscores the importance of early intervention in reducing the long-term burden of dental disease.
