KARACHI: The Earth Day 2025 celebration at Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) unfolded with renewed environmental spirit and inspiring student engagement, echoing this year’s international theme: “Our Power, Our Planet.” Held at the Pre-Clinical Campus, the event transformed the learning environment into a hub of eco-conscious creativity and climate advocacy.

The annual Earth Day observance raises urgent awareness about environmental sustainability. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 13 million preventable deaths each year are linked to environmental causes—making awareness campaigns like this one not only relevant but lifesaving.

A student-centered climate action platform

FJDC’s Earth Day initiative was designed to instill a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility among dental students. Emphasizing that climate action begins with individual and collective effort, the college encouraged active participation from both 1st and 2nd year BDS students.

In symbolic alignment with the planet-friendly theme, participants wore earth-toned attire to reflect their commitment to a healthier, greener Earth. The college’s faculty also took part, amplifying the message that environmental leadership must begin at educational institutions.

Activities that blended art, science, and sustainability

A series of interactive, educational, and artistic activities helped students creatively express their concern for the environment:

  • Digital poster competition with strong messages on climate change, renewable energy, and pollution
  • Paintings and sketches portraying themes such as ocean plastic, biodiversity, and urban pollution
  • Student presentations covering sustainable living, green dentistry, and global warming
  • Earth Day-themed spelling bee to reinforce eco-vocabulary and awareness
  • Eco-props and model displays made from recycled materials

Each activity provided students a platform to demonstrate their understanding of sustainability, pollution control, and green innovation—critical concepts in today’s healthcare and environmental ecosystems.

FJDC’s role in promoting eco-literacy

By integrating environment-focused events into its academic calendar, Fatima Jinnah Dental College continues to set a precedent for higher education institutions in Pakistan. FJDC’s Earth Day celebration aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those related to health, climate action, and responsible consumption.

Faculty at the event highlighted the interconnectedness between oral health and environmental well-being, emphasizing how eco-friendly practices in dental healthcare—like minimizing plastic use and managing biomedical waste—can contribute to larger global sustainability efforts.
