KARACHI: Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) has organized a two-day Research Camp 2026 to introduce first-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students to scientific research, enabling participants to develop and present original research proposals through an intensive, hands-on learning experience.

Held on July 7-8 at the auditorium of the college's Pre-clinical Campus, the programme was organized by the FJDC Research Cell for First-Year BDS Batch 34 as part of the institution's ongoing efforts to strengthen undergraduate research and promote evidence-based dentistry.

Designed for students with little or no previous research experience, the camp focused on building fundamental research competencies, including research methodology, study design, formulation of research questions and objectives, and the principles of scientific inquiry.

The inaugural session featured addresses by Principal Professor Dr. Babur Ashraf and Vice Principal Dr. Sameer Qureshi, who highlighted the growing importance of research in advancing dental education, improving patient care and supporting evidence-based clinical practice.

Academic sessions were conducted by Professor Dr. Hasan Mehdi, Dr. Afreen Agha and Dr. Mehwish Ayaz, who introduced participants to core concepts of research methodology and guided them through the essential components of designing scientific studies.

The programme also incorporated interactive group activities facilitated by Dr. Mehwish Ayaz and Mr. M. Zubair Khan, allowing students to apply theoretical concepts by developing visual concept maps and presenting different research study designs. An interactive Kahoot! quiz at the end of the first day reinforced key learning points while recognizing top-performing participants.

On the second day, students refined their research ideas under the mentorship of the Research Cell before presenting their proposals during the Research Idea Pitch Competition. Eight student groups delivered PowerPoint presentations before an evaluation panel comprising CEO Professor Dr. Hussain Askary, Principal Professor Dr. Babur Ashraf, Vice Principal Dr. Sameer Qureshi, Academic Coordinator Dr. Sabiha Mirza, Head of the Department of Dental Materials Dr. Afreen Agha, and Director Academics Professor Dr. Gulrukh Askary.

The panel assessed each proposal on its scientific rationale, methodology, feasibility and potential significance while encouraging students to defend their ideas through discussion and critical questioning. Despite their limited research experience, participants demonstrated confidence, analytical thinking and a sound understanding of fundamental research principles.

At the conclusion of the programme, the three best research proposals were awarded cash prizes, while winners of the Kahoot! competition also received recognition. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to all participants for their active involvement throughout the camp.

In his closing remarks, Professor Dr. Hussain Askary praised both the Research Cell and participating students for the successful execution of the programme. He noted that several of the research proposals showed promising potential to be further developed into publishable scientific studies.

The college said the initiative reflects its commitment to integrating research into undergraduate dental education and preparing future dentists who are equipped not only with clinical skills but also with the ability to contribute to scientific research and evidence-based oral healthcare.
