KARACHI: Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC), in its ongoing commitment to community health and preventive dental care, recently conducted a tobacco awareness and dental screening session at The Lyceum School. The initiative aimed to educate staff members on the harmful effects of tobacco use, debunk myths surrounding nicotine alternatives, and provide on-site dental checkups to promote better oral health.
Raising Awareness on Tobacco’s Hidden Dangers
Led by Dr. Hibba Kaukab Mughal (Manager Outreach Programs) and FJDC House Officers, the session focused on the aggressive marketing tactics of the tobacco industry and the long-term health hazards of smoking and smokeless tobacco products. The discussion also addressed the growing popularity of e-cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches, which are often misleadingly marketed as "safer" alternatives.
A significant aspect of the session was its interactive format, encouraging staff members to share personal experiences, ask questions, and reflect on their own tobacco consumption habits. Many attendees expressed a willingness to cut down on tobacco use, taking the first step toward a healthier lifestyle.
Alumni-Led Initiative for Community Impact
The session was made possible through the efforts of Dr. Adnan Zaidi, a renowned dentist, FJDC alumnus, and former Lyceum student. His dedication to giving back to his alma mater aligns with FJDC’s broader vision of making oral healthcare accessible through community outreach and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
By forging partnerships with educational institutions, corporate organizations, and local communities, FJDC extends its impact beyond its dental clinics. Through awareness programs, free dental screenings, and tobacco cessation campaigns, the institution actively promotes preventive healthcare and lifestyle changes.
On-Site Dental Screenings & Special Incentives
A total of 36 staff members participated in the session, receiving personalized dental counseling and free oral health screenings. To further support their journey to improved oral health, FJDC offered:
✅ Complimentary scaling services at FJDC’s hospital
✅ 25% discount on all dental treatments
✅ Guidance on tobacco cessation and long-term oral care
Many attendees availed these services, emphasizing the importance of accessible dental care and preventive treatment.
Promoting a Tobacco-Free Future
FJDC remains at the forefront of public health education, playing a crucial role in combating tobacco-related diseases and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices. By empowering individuals with essential oral health knowledge, the institution continues to foster a culture of prevention and early intervention.
The successful collaboration with The Lyceum highlights the importance of collective action in addressing public health challenges. With an unwavering commitment to oral healthcare and community well-being, FJDC will continue to expand its outreach, ensuring that more individuals gain access to life-changing dental education and preventive care.
