Hamdard University students gain hands-on training in dental splinting

KARACHI: Third-year BDS students at Hamdard University Dental Hospital received hands-on training in dental splinting during a practical workshop organized by the Department of Periodontology, giving them an opportunity to apply classroom concepts in an experimental setting.

The one-day workshop was conducted for BDS Batch 26 and used goat heads and mandibles as an experimental teaching model to familiarize students with the principles and techniques involved in dental splinting.

The session began with an introductory lecture on dental splints, followed by a video presentation by Dr. Amna Arsalan. The theoretical component was then followed by practical exercises in which students worked with the goat head and mandible specimens under faculty supervision.

Prof. Syed Imran Hassan, Dr. Amna Arsalan, Dr. Bilal Ansari and Dr. Saad Ali facilitated the practical session, guiding students through the procedures and helping them understand the application of splinting techniques.

The workshop was aimed at strengthening students’ clinical understanding and procedural confidence by allowing them to practise techniques in a controlled experimental environment before encountering similar procedures in clinical practice.

Prof. Syed Imran Hassan, Head of the Department of Periodontology and Principal of Hamdard University Dental Hospital, provided administrative support and guidance for the activity.

The workshop also included an educational assessment component. Dr. Hafsa Feroze of the Department of Dental Education developed the learning objectives and collected feedback from participating students to assess their learning experience and help inform future practical teaching activities.

The combination of a focused lecture, video instruction, supervised practical training and student feedback provided participants with a structured learning experience centred on dental splinting.

The workshop concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participating students, marking the completion of the practical training activity.
