KARACHI: Third-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students from the Department of Periodontology at Hamdard University Dental Hospital visited Platinum Pharmaceutical Company as part of an educational initiative aimed at linking academic learning with practical healthcare systems.

The visit, conducted under the theme “Perio-Pharma Interface,” was designed to provide students with direct exposure to pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and to help them understand how commonly used dental medications are developed, tested, and distributed.

During the visit, students were briefed on various stages of pharmaceutical production, including raw material processing, formulation, manufacturing techniques, packaging systems, and quality control procedures. They were also introduced to regulatory standards and safety protocols that govern the production of medicines used in patient care.

Faculty members accompanying the students said the experience was intended to strengthen conceptual learning in pharmacology and periodontology by showing how theoretical knowledge is applied in industrial and clinical contexts. They added that such exposure helps students better understand the scientific and regulatory foundations of evidence-based dental practice.

The visit was supervised by faculty members of the Department of Periodontology, including Dr. Amna Arsalan, Dr. Bilal Shahid Ansari, Dr. Hafsa Feroze, and Dr. Saad Ali, under the guidance of Prof. Syed Imran Hasan, Head of Department and Principal of Hamdard University Dental Hospital.

According to the department, a key focus of the visit was the importance of quality assurance and regulatory compliance in ensuring the safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical products. Students observed industry practices designed to maintain consistent product quality and learned about the role of regulatory frameworks in safeguarding patient health.

Officials said the activity was part of a broader shift toward experiential and interdisciplinary learning in dental education, aimed at preparing students for modern healthcare environments that require both clinical expertise and an understanding of related scientific industries.

The Department of Periodontology noted that students actively participated in discussions during the visit and showed strong interest in understanding the link between pharmaceutical sciences and dental treatment.

The initiative reflects Hamdard University Dental Hospital’s continued efforts to enhance academic training through practical exposure and to promote evidence-based, patient-centered dental education.
