LAHORE: A one-day hands-on workshop on dental implants for general dental practitioners was conducted recently at the Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR). The event was organized as part of the IADSR 19th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD) program, reinforcing its commitment to advancing clinical skills and evidence-based practice among dental professionals.

The session was led by eminent dental implantologist Prof. Dr. Amin-Ur-Rahman, BDS, DDS, MPH, MS, MPH, who serves as a faculty member at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. His global expertise brought valuable insights into the practical aspects of implant dentistry.

Prof. Dr. Amin began with a comprehensive overview of dental implant statistics and the historical background of implantology. He explained the anatomy of the alveolar bone and its critical relationship with teeth and implants, providing participants with a strong biological foundation for clinical decision-making.

The workshop covered implant materials and various types of implants, including tissue-level and bone-level implants. Participants were guided through surgical procedure protocols step by step, with Prof. Amin emphasizing that successful dental implants depend on careful communication, treatment planning, and execution.

He also discussed common causes of implant failures, differentiating between early and late-stage failures, and shared strategies for their prevention. Real-world implant cases, such as single-tooth replacement, multiple-tooth replacement, and cemented screw-retained prostheses, were reviewed to create an interactive learning environment.

The highlight of the day was the hands-on training session, where participants practiced implant procedures on typodont models under expert supervision. Challenges faced during practice were addressed immediately by Prof. Amin and his facilitating team, ensuring a highly engaging and problem-solving experience.

The workshop concluded with overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants, who praised the practical exposure and knowledge enhancement it provided. IADSR reiterated its commitment to raising the standard of dental education and training in Pakistan by offering advanced learning opportunities like this workshop.
