LAHORE: A highly anticipated hands-on workshop on Fixed Prosthodontics was successfully held at the Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) recently, as part of the prestigious 18th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD). The intensive two-day session was led by Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Saleem, an expert in Prosthodontics and the Head of Department at Islamabad Medical and Dental College.

Enhancing practical expertise in fixed prosthodontics

The workshop focused on critical aspects of crown and bridge procedures, providing participants with clinically relevant knowledge and hands-on training aligned with best practices in restorative dentistry.

Day 1: Mastering crown preparations and shade mapping

The first day emphasized crown preparations, where Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Saleem presented a comprehensive overview of:

  • Clinical indications for full and partial coverage crowns
  • Tooth preparation techniques on typodonts, including margin design, taper, and occlusal reduction
  • Material selection and case-based treatment planning

An essential component was shade selection and mapping, where participants learned how natural shade gradation and lighting impact aesthetic restorations. Attendees also practiced taking putty impressions to replicate prepared teeth accurately, ensuring clinical precision.

Day 2: Fixed bridge construction and clinical application

The second day expanded on bridgework, covering:

  • Principles of fixed partial dentures
  • Evaluation of abutment teeth and pontic design for function and aesthetics
  • Step-by-step demonstration and hands-on bridge preparation

Participants practiced multi-unit impression techniques under direct supervision, refined occlusal evaluation skills, and discussed patient-specific hygiene protocols for pontics.

Personalized learning and feedback

The workshop concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, where dental professionals presented clinical concerns and received expert feedback from Dr. Tayyaba. This interactive format ensured that each participant could align theory with practical application, thereby meeting all learning objectives with confidence.

A trusted platform for dental excellence

Through real-world guidance and evidence-based instruction, the IADSR workshop demonstrated a commitment to professional development in restorative dentistry, reinforcing the institute’s reputation as a center of excellence in dental education.
