Over 860 graduates awarded degrees at HU Convocation By Our Staff Reporter KARACHI- Over 860 degrees, including 12 Ph. D, were awarded to students of seven faculties of the Hamdard University at an impressive convocation ceremony held at its newly built hall of Madinat al-Hikmah. It was the 19th Convocation of the university.

Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahemd was the chief guest at the convocation while Hamdard University’s Chancellor Mrs Sadia Rashid presided over it. Hamdard University’s Vice Chancellor Prof ( Dr) Hakim Abdul Hannan, Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Managing Director Dr Navaid ul Zafar and Abdul Haseeb Khan also graced the occasion. A large number of educationists, stutents and their parents were present.

The dignitaries gave Hamdard University medals to 24 position holders and Hakim Mohammed Said gold medals to eight best students of the university.

Speaking on the occasion, the HEC chief Dr Mukhtar Ahmed Said that there was a very lesser part of training and research in education of the country while founder of Hamdard University, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said highly insisted on training and research. However, the research should be beneficial to nation, country and humanity at large, he added.

“‘We are making institutions after institutions and buildings after building, but not focusing on research, which is only way to progress in the modern world,” he said that government cannot promote education in the country alone and hence private sector should come forward for this purpose.

He urged the private sector and rich individuals to take inspiration from Hakim Said as he was a legendary philanthropist and a visionary hakim, who realized the importance of education in building a nation and country.

He said that still 5.45 million children are deprived of education in the country and they could get education if the philanthropists of the country come forward and put their shares in education like Hamdard and Hakim Mohammed Said.

“Negligence of education tantamounts to damage the country and nation,” Dr Ahmed opined, saying standard of education should not be compromised at any stage as sub-standard education was of no use.

Paying glowing tribute to Hakim Said, he said that he had an honour to spend some time with him at Faisalabad Campus and found him a legendary and visionary person. Following his footprints we should light a lamp to make our country an enlightened and educated nation, he concluded.

Hamdard University’s Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr) Hakim Abdul Hannan said that the university had, so far, produced 23, 117 graduates, including 103 Ph Ds, 987 M. Phil. and M. S.
