LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR), as part of its 19th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD), recently conducted a comprehensive two-day hands-on workshop on exodontia. The workshop was facilitated by Prof. Arshad Mahmood Malik (BDS, MDS, FICD, FPFA), Dean of HBS Dental College, Islamabad, who shared his vast clinical experience and academic insight with the participants.

The session began with an insightful overview of the history and evolution of exodontia, setting the foundation for understanding modern extraction practices. Prof. Arshad discussed the anatomy of each tooth, emphasizing root curvature and angulation—key considerations in planning extractions.

He also elaborated on pre-surgical assessment protocols, including patient history, system review, physical and radiographic examinations, and laboratory investigations. The facilitator further demonstrated furcation analysis techniques and explained how to measure furcation depth effectively.

The second day of the workshop was fully dedicated to practical hands-on exercises, where participants performed extractions under supervision. Prof. Arshad demonstrated the correct usage of essential dental instruments such as elevators, forceps, and Coupland, Cryer’s, and angular elevators. The practical component was designed to help practitioners overcome common challenges encountered in clinical settings.

Participants appreciated the opportunity to gain direct surgical exposure, refine their instrument handling skills, and discuss complication management strategies with an expert. The interactive format encouraged open dialogue and case-based discussions, fostering a deeper understanding of modern exodontia practices.

The workshop concluded with positive feedback from attendees, who commended IADSR for organizing a high-quality, clinically relevant learning experience that bridges theory and practice in oral surgery.
