RAWALPINDI: Demonstrating a commitment to continuous professional development and the overall well-being of its faculty, Margalla Institute of Health Sciences recently held an interactive session on 'Menopause' – a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of women's health.

The event, organized by Margalla College of Dentistry, commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran.

Dr Samira Khan, the guest speaker, shared her expertise as a consultant gynecologist, IVF specialist, and sonologist with international credentials (MBBS, MRCOG-UK, MRCPI-Ireland, Dip. ART-Germany, DOWH-Ireland).

Dr Samira, dismissing societal taboos, explained the biological phase of menopause, defined as the absence of menstruation for 12 consecutive months in women reaching it naturally. She elucidated the physiological changes associated with menopause, marked by the cessation of egg maturation and the secretion of estrogen and progesterone by the ovaries.

The session also addressed clinical manifestations and long-term implications, particularly focusing on osteoporosis—a systemic skeletal disorder resulting in low bone mass, increased fragility, and susceptibility to fractures.

With statistics indicating that one in three women is affected by osteoporosis, and around 40pc will experience an osteoporotic fracture during their lifetime, Dr Samira emphasized treatment options.

The primary goal of the session was to disseminate knowledge on menopause, covering societal standards, treatment approaches, and potential measures for improvement. Participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions, seeking clarifications on available treatments and their outcomes.

In recognition of her valuable contributions, Prof Dr Amjad Mahmood, Principal & Dean of Margalla College of Dentistry, presented a shield to Dr Samira Khan at the conclusion of the session.
