LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences & Research (IADSR) highlighted the clinical importance of occlusion, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and splint therapy through an interactive continuing dental education session led by Dr Hamza Sahaf.
The session focused on key considerations in occlusal assessment, TMJ dysfunction and occlusal splint therapy, with particular emphasis on diagnosis, clinical evaluation and treatment planning. It also sought to help dental professionals connect foundational concepts with practical, evidence-based application in everyday practice.
Participants in the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry reviewed the fundamentals of occlusal assessment and examined how systematic clinical evaluation can contribute to understanding occlusal relationships and developing appropriate treatment plans.
The academic discussion also addressed TMJ dysfunction, with participants considering the clinical assessment and diagnostic approach required when evaluating temporomandibular joint-related concerns. The session linked TMJ evaluation with occlusal considerations, highlighting the importance of viewing functional and parafunctional factors within the broader clinical picture.
A major component of the session was occlusal splint therapy, with participants reviewing its indications, design principles and clinical application. The discussion covered the role of occlusal splints in managing functional and parafunctional disorders and the clinical considerations involved in determining their appropriate use.
The emphasis on diagnosis and treatment planning reinforced that splint therapy extends beyond appliance selection. Proper clinical assessment and an understanding of the underlying functional concerns are important when determining whether a splint is appropriate and how it should be incorporated into patient management.
Through its interactive format, the session connected theoretical knowledge with clinical decision-making, enabling participants to consider how concepts related to occlusion, TMJ dysfunction and splint therapy can be applied in routine dental practice.
The activity reflects the role of continuing dental education in strengthening clinical knowledge and supporting evidence-based practice. By bringing together closely related areas of functional dentistry, the session aimed to enhance participants’ clinical understanding and their ability to apply these principles appropriately in patient care.
