Senior dental academic Prof. Nasir Ali Khan appointed as Dean of Dentisry at KMU

KARACHI: The Sindh government has named Prof. Dr. Nasir Ali Khan as the new Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and Allied Sciences at Karachi Metropolitan University for a three-year term. The decision was conveyed through an official notification issued by the Universities and Boards Department on January 26, 2026, under the provisions of the Karachi Metropolitan University Act, 2022. The appointment was approved by the Chief Minister of Sindh and formally communicated by Secretary Muhammad Abbas Baloch.

Prof. Dr. Nasir Ali Khan currently heads the Department of Oral Biology and is widely recognized for his long-standing contribution to dental education and professional development in Pakistan. He is a graduate of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, where he completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1992–93, followed by Membership of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2001. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Karachi and a fellowship from the International College of Continuing Dental Education.

After joining Karachi Medical and Dental College in 1997, Prof. Dr. Khan became actively involved in shaping academic programs and strengthening institutional systems. He has led the Oral Biology department since 2002 and has also served as Convener of Oral Biology at both the University of Karachi and Karachi Metropolitan University. In addition, he has contributed to assessment and quality assurance as an external examiner in oral biology and tooth morphology for several public and private universities across the country.

Beyond academics, he has handled key administrative responsibilities at KMDC, including leadership of sports, premises, and security committees, and has remained closely associated with convocation planning. He performed the role of convocation secretary in 2018 and again in 2022, reflecting his continued involvement in university affairs.

Prof. Dr. Nasir Ali Khan has also played a prominent role in professional organizations at national and regional levels. He has served as Vice President of the Asia Pacific Dental Federation and previously held the position of Secretary General of the Pakistan Dental Association Central Council. His earlier assignments include vice president of the Pakistan Dental Association Sindh Chapter and joint secretary general of the Pakistan Society of Dental Surgeons. He also represented Sindh as a member of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council from 2015 to 2017.

At the 43rd Asia Pacific Dental Congress held in Pakistan in 2022, he worked as Secretary of the Congress, overseeing a major scientific program featuring more than 100 international speakers. Earlier, he received the Best Man of the Congress Award at the PDA International Dental Conference in Karachi in 2015.

He has represented Pakistan at numerous international dental forums in Turkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, underlining his commitment to academic exchange and global collaboration.

Academic peers describe Prof. Dr. Khan as a committed teacher, competent clinician, and supportive mentor. His elevation to the post of dean is being viewed as an important move toward strengthening teaching standards, expanding faculty capacity, and improving clinical training within Karachi Metropolitan University.

With decades of experience in education, administration, and professional leadership, Prof. Dr. Nasir Ali Khan is expected to guide the Faculty of Dentistry and Allied Sciences toward further growth and innovation during his tenure.
