ISLAMABAD: The School of Dentistry at Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) has highlighted the growing importance of green dentistry through a sustainability-focused academic initiative aimed at undergraduate students.
The initiative, which concluded with Greenovation Day, was designed to integrate environmental sustainability into dental education and promote eco-conscious clinical thinking among future dental professionals.
In modern healthcare, green dentistry is increasingly influencing how clinicians are trained, with emphasis shifting toward reducing environmental harm, improving resource efficiency, and rethinking clinical waste management. Areas such as eco-friendly clinic design, digital workflows, responsible sterilization systems, and waste segregation are becoming important components of contemporary dental practice.
At SZABMU, the project was developed by the Department of Community Dentistry in collaboration with the Department of Medical Education as a structured educational model focused on sustainability in healthcare.
The initiative was led under the vision of Dr. Nighat Zia, with academic support from Head of Department Dr. Farooq Ahmed Chaudhary and coordination by Dr. Ayesha Fazal.
As part of the project, third-year dental students participated in a series of green activity stalls and practical learning exercises. These included conceptual models of sustainable dental clinics, waste segregation demonstrations, and awareness-based activities designed to connect environmental responsibility with clinical practice.
The event also featured interactive educational tools, including games and participatory activities, to enhance student and faculty engagement. The approach reflected a broader shift in medical education toward experiential and problem-based learning.
University leadership, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Tanveer Khaliq and Principal Dr. Bilal Ahmed, attended the closing activities, underscoring the institution’s emphasis on sustainability as an emerging academic priority.
Greenovation Day marked the closing phase of the wider sustainability project, demonstrating the feasibility of embedding environmental principles into dental curricula.
The initiative is being seen as a step toward preparing future dentists who are trained not only in clinical competence but also in environmentally responsible decision-making, reflecting broader global trends in sustainable healthcare education.
