7th International Pakistan Prosthodontic Association Conference Held

With the aim to provide platform in the field of Prosthodontics in Pakistan, the 7th International Pakistan Prosthodontic Association (PPA) Conference was held. The event was held to promote and facilitate the research culture in dental community. The conference was held at Sardar Begum Dental College (SBDC), Gandhara University, inaugurated by Professor Abdus-Salam, Vice Chancellor of Gandhara University. The event was presided by Professor Dr Syed Nasir Shah, President PPA and Head of Prosthodontic Department, SBDC, Peshawar.

Prof Dr Ali Chughtai, Professor of Prosthodontics, SBDC was the Chief organizer of the event. Dr Hammad Hassan, Head of Prosthodontic department of Margalla Institute of Health Sciences and General and Finance secretary, PPA acted as the Conference Secretary. About 600 participants registered for the conference to learn from the experiences of 4 International and 22 national speakers. Among the international speakers were Maxillofacial Prosthodontists D. Pokpong Amornvit and Dr Waqas Tanveer from Mahidol University, Thailand. Dr Zulaikha Burki, Master’s in Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) Prosthodontics, from Kings College London and Periodontist, Dr Nejat Nizam from Ege University, Turkey were also invited.

Professor Dr Hina Zafar Raja, Professor of Prosthodontics, Institute of Dentistry, CMH (Combined Military Hospitals), Lahore was appointed as the Chairperson of Scientific committee. Informative scientific papers were presented on the topics of Implantology, Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, Operative dentistry, Orthodontics and Dental materials. Treatment planning session was held in presence of panel experts for Post-Graduate students

A Poster competition was held in which Dr Saqib Habib and Dr Kamil Zafar, Agha Khan University won first position. The second positions were secured by Dr Sana Irfan and Dr Sumera Salamat, Islamic International Dental College and Hospital while Dr Haider Ali, Dr Faryal Saeed and Dr Maheen Khan from Khyber College of Dentistry (KCD) stood third in the competition. Winners were awarded shields with cash prizes of Rs. 20,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively.

Dr Rabia Iftikhar, Dr Faiza Shaheen and Dr Rudaina Amirzada from KCD won first position in Art competition. Winners were awarded with cash prize of Rs. 20,000. Dr Sunia Gul and Dr Laila Shakeel from Islamic International Dental College secured second and third positions respectively.

A Quiz competition was also held which was facilitated by Prof Dr Tayyaba Saleem. Dr Mashal Afridi, Dr Seema Rehman and Dr Fizza Rashid, KCD won first position. Dr Mashal, Dr Fizza and Dr Asifa, Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry got second position and Dr Asiya, Dr Bushra and Dr Sadiqa from Bolan Medical and Dental College got third position. Winners were awarded cash prizes of Rs. 20,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively.

There were 4 preconference workshop and 2 post conference workshops. The 2 day workshop on “Fabrication of nasal prosthesis” was held in SBDC and was facilitated by Dr Waqas Tanveer. The workshop on ‘Chair side onlay preparation, fabrication and cementation’ by Professor Dr Muhammad Nasir Saleem and on ‘Ceramic veneers, preparation designs and treatment strategies’ by Dr Hammad Hassan were conducted in Rehman College of Dentistry. Two workshops were conducted in Khyber college of dentistry on ‘The art and science of aesthetic and functional crown lengthening’ by Dr Muhammad Haseeb and Dr Tariq Ali Khan. The second workshop was on “Surgical and Prosthodontic techniques of implants” which was facilitated by Dr Nejat Nizam and Dr Zulaikha Burki. The last workshop with the title ‘Diagnosis of occlusal interferences, different bite registration techniques, transfer to semi adjustable articulator’ was arranged in SBDC. It was facilitated by Professor Dr Syed Nasir Shah and Dr Mariya Khalid.

Gala dinner was also arranged for the participants in which shields were presented to heads of all organizing committees. Life time achievement awards were given to Prof Dr Ahmed Iqbal, Prof Dr Nazia Yazdanie and Dr. Gohar Zaman Babar. Cultural shawls and traditional chitrali caps were presented to all International speakers as a token of gratitude.

At closing ceremony, Professor Dr Hina Zafar Raja was selected as the new President of Pakistan prosthodontics Association for the year 2020.  8th International Pakistan Prosthodontic Association conference was announced to be held in in Lahore. 7th International PPA conference was well organized and provided ample opportunities for  participants to exchange knowledge, share ideas and presented innovative research projects, thereby , refining oral health care in Pakistan. Conference delegates regarded all scientific sessions as highly beneficial.
