KARACHI: Dental students from Baqai Dental College conducted oral health awareness sessions for women and schoolchildren at the Family Welfare Centre (FWC) in Lyari, highlighting practical ways to prevent tooth decay, protect gum health and maintain daily oral hygiene.

Organised by the college’s Department of Community Dentistry, the field visit aimed to extend preventive dental education beyond the classroom while giving students hands-on experience in community health promotion.

During the sessions, students explained the importance of brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and using a soft-bristled toothbrush with the correct technique. They also cautioned against aggressive brushing, which can contribute to gum damage and tooth wear.

Participants were further advised about interdental cleaning with dental floss to remove plaque and food particles from areas that brushing alone may not adequately reach. The discussions emphasised how consistent oral hygiene practices can help reduce the risk of dental caries and periodontal disease.

The visit was conducted under the supervision of Professor Dr Asghar Ali Shigri, accompanied by Dr Samreen, Dr Noman and Dr Mohsin Abbas.

Alongside educating community members, the activity allowed students to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting and strengthen their communication skills through direct engagement with women and schoolchildren.

Community-based activities form an important part of dental education, helping future practitioners understand the role of preventive care and public awareness in reducing oral disease. The Lyari visit brought this approach into practice by focusing on everyday habits that people can incorporate into their oral hygiene routines.

The activity also highlighted the role of dental institutions in supporting community health through accessible education, early prevention and engagement with people outside conventional clinical settings.
