KARACHI – Hepatitis which is spreading rapidly in Pakistan was killing more than 400 lives a day and more than 150,000 people a year, said Health Foundation chief Dr Laila Rizvi.
She was speaking at a blood screening camp set up at Patel Hospital on the occasion of World Hepatitis Day.
She attributed the causes of hepatitis A in the country to polluted water, industrial waste and environmental pollution.
She said that a moderate to high prevalence of hepatitis B & C in different parts of Sindh, especially in Dadu, Ghotki, Khairpur and Sanghar, was due to unsafe syringes used in medical care, drug abuse and unsafe blood and blood products transfusion.
She urged medical experts and relevant stakeholders to actively engage themselves in national drive to raise awareness on how this deadly disease could be prevented through massive vaccination among children.
