KARACHI: The Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC) carried out an extensive oral health awareness and dental screening campaign at Ahmed Bawany Academy in Karachi, reinforcing its role in promoting preventive dentistry within the community. The activity focused on improving daily oral care habits and identifying dental issues among schoolchildren at an early stage.

The program was arranged by JMDC’s Community Dentistry Department under the guidance of Dr. Muhammad Mohsin Haider, Assistant Professor and Head of the department. The initiative reflects the college’s long-term objective of linking academic training with real-world public health services.

A multidisciplinary dental team took part in the visit, ensuring that both education and examination components were delivered efficiently. Demonstrators Dr. Arish Sohail and Dr. Aimen Imran, supported by house officers and dental hygienists, conducted structured sessions that allowed large numbers of students to be reached within a limited time.

Around 1,200 students, ranging from pre-primary to secondary classes, were assessed during the campaign. Screenings were performed class by class with teachers present, creating a supportive setting and helping students remain comfortable throughout the process. Each child received individual attention while maintaining smooth classroom flow.

Alongside dental check-ups, the team conducted practical demonstrations on correct tooth-brushing methods using visual teaching aids. These interactive lessons were designed to help children understand how simple habits can prevent cavities, gum problems, and future dental complications.

School management welcomed the initiative and praised JMDC for bringing professional dental services directly to students. Administrators noted that such programs play a key role in raising awareness and reducing the risk of oral diseases among young learners.

Health specialists emphasize that school-based dental education combined with on-site screening is one of the most effective ways to control tooth decay and gum disease in children. Programs like this not only detect problems early but also instill lifelong hygiene practices.

JMDC officials stated that the outreach at Ahmed Bawany Academy is part of a broader plan to extend similar activities to other schools across Karachi. Through sustained community engagement, the institution aims to improve access to basic dental care and strengthen awareness of oral health as an essential part of overall well-being.
