KMU launches first oral health program for visually impaired individuals

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan University (KMU) has taken a significant step towards inclusive healthcare by launching the first-ever oral health outreach program specifically designed for visually impaired individuals. This program, organized by the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, underscores the university’s commitment to serving marginalized communities and providing accessible healthcare solutions.

Held at the Binae Institute, the event aimed to raise oral health awareness and provide hands-on education for visually impaired adults and children. This is the first initiative of its kind, offering tailored care to a group often overlooked by traditional healthcare outreach programs.

The oral health screening was accompanied by personalized training in essential oral hygiene practices, including proper brushing techniques and flossing, ensuring participants gained the tools they need to maintain their oral health independently. The program also provided essential oral hygiene kits, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, to support ongoing care at home.

Under the expert guidance of Prof. Dr. Sana Adeeba Islam, the program successfully addressed the gap in oral healthcare for visually impaired individuals. The initiative was coordinated by Dr. Abdul Aleem, Senior Registrar and Visit Coordinator, whose efforts ensured the smooth execution of the event.
