LCMD hosts two-day BDS sports extravaganza

KARACHI: In a recent collaborative effort between the Co-curricular Committee and Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry (LCMD), the BDS Sports Event 2023 was a resounding success, showcasing two days of sportsmanship and healthy competition.

The event was graced by Prof Dr Navid Rashid Qureshi, Principal of the College of Dentistry-LCMD, Dr Saad Usmani, Chairperson of the Co-Curricular Committee, and Dr Sadaf Asrar, Secretary of the Co-Curricular Committee. Mr Hamza Chisti was the chief guest for the event that was expertly moderated and facilitated by Mr Murad and his enthusiastic team.

To keep the participants energized throughout the event, refreshments and lunch, including tea and coffee, were provided. LCMD's commitment to promoting sportsmanship and healthy competition among students was evident in the diverse range of indoor and outdoor games, including badminton, cricket, table tennis, throw ball, tug of war, and arm wrestling.

The aim of the event, as articulated by Prof Dr Navid Rashid Qureshi, was to encourage students to enhance their sports skills alongside their academic pursuits. Extracurricular activities are essential in addressing issues like academic burnout and improving students' mental health, he said.

The participating students were divided into four teams: 1st-year Enthusiasts, 2nd-year Excellencies, 3rd-year Pioneers, and final-year Visionaries.

The winners and runners-up in various categories were: Arm wrestling: Winner: Samieh Paracha - Team Excellencies (2nd year BDS) Runner-up: Abdul Aziz - Team Pioneers (3rd year BDS)

Badminton Girls: 1st Position: Maham Waheed - Team Visionaries (4th year BDS) Runner-up: Ume Laila - Team Excellencies (2nd year BDS).

Table Tennis: Winner: Ubaid Yahya - Team Pioneers (3rd year BDS), Runner-up: Assad Ullah Jiskani - Team Excellencies (2nd year BDS).

Throw Ball (Girls): 1st Position: Team Enthusiasts (1st year BDS) Runner-up: Team Pioneers (3rd year BDS).

Futsal Boys: 1st Position: Team Enthusiasts (1st year BDS) Runner-up: Team Excellencies (2nd year BDS)

Cricket Boys: 1st Position: Team Pioneers (3rd year BDS) Runner-up: Team Excellencies (2nd year BDS).

Tug Of War (Girls): 1st Position: Team Enthusiasts (1st year BDS) Runner-up: Team Visionaries (Final Year).

Tug Of War (Boys): 1st Position: Team Excellencies (2nd year BDS) Runner-up: Team Pioneers (3rd year BDS).

A student, Ubaid, representing Team Pioneers from the 3rd year was declared the standout performer of the tournament.

To recognize the students' achievements beyond academics, a prize distribution ceremony was later held at the LCMD Auditorium, where trophies, medals, shields, and certificates were awarded to the winning and runner-up teams. The top three position holders were honored with trophies, while all participants received shields, medals, and certificates of participation.

The event concluded with closing remarks and a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Saad Usmani, Associate Professor and HOD of the Department of Anatomy, and Chairperson of the Co-Curricular Committee.

The Co-Curricular Committee and LCMD were lauded for creating a platform that united all students under one roof. Their support played a pivotal role in organizing this event for the betterment and flourishing of future endeavors.
