KARACHI: Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry (LCMD) recently organized a Community Oral Health Outreach Program (COHOP-LCMD), focusing on improving oral health awareness among special needs children. The initiative, led by the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, involved an educational and dental checkup session for 2nd Year BDS students, who visited the Government Special Education and Rehabilitation Complex (SERC), Karachi.

The program was supervised by Dr. Munnawar ul Haque, Head of the Community and Preventive Dentistry Department, along with faculty members Dr. Abid Khursheed, Dr. Fasih ul Haque, Dr. Hassaan Sadiq, and Mr. Imran Nazeer. Before the outreach visit, Dr. Munnawar conducted a specialized training session to equip BDS students with the necessary skills for conducting dental checkups and patient management.

The outreach initiative had two key segments: Dental Education and Free Dental Checkups. The education segment aimed at teaching children proper oral hygiene practices, including correct brushing techniques demonstrated on a teeth model. Following this, students engaged in an interactive session to reinforce the importance of maintaining good oral health.

In the dental checkup segment, the BDS students—under faculty supervision—conducted free oral examinations for approximately 250 special children at the center. To encourage better dental hygiene habits, the team also distributed gift boxes and dental kits to the children.

This initiative reflects LCMD’s commitment to community service and oral health awareness, particularly among vulnerable groups. Such programs not only benefit special needs children but also help future dentists develop critical patient care skills, reinforcing the importance of preventive dentistry.
