KARACHI: In line with the renowned quote by Bobby Sherman urging individuals to acquaint themselves with first aid and CPR, the Periodontology Department, in collaboration with General Medicine, held a hands-on assessment session on "Basic Life Support (BLS)" at the Bahria University Dental College (BUDC) recently.

Headed by Surgeon Commander (Surg Cdr) Prof Dr Pervaiz Asghar and Prof Dr Farzeen Tanwir, this event stressed the importance of BLS assessment in the routine life of healthcare professionals.

The event's objective was to evaluate the competency of house officers and final-year students in implementing the BLS technique, an integral part of their curriculum, to effectively manage life-threatening emergencies.

BLS training equips individuals with the necessary skills to handle critical medical situations, such as cardiac arrest and airway obstructions.

During the session, Dr Pervaiz Asghar provided an extensive demonstration of BLS techniques using a mannequin as a teaching aid. Each participant had the opportunity to practice these techniques on the mannequin, thereby translating their theoretical knowledge into practical expertise.

Various tools, including Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs), and the bag valve mask (BVM) AmbuBag, were employed for the assessment. The components of BLS training included initial assessment, airway maintenance, rescue breathing, mouth-to-mouth ventilation, exhaled air ventilation, and chest compressions.

The proficiency of the healthcare professionals was evaluated by Prof Dr Farzeen Tanwir, Dr Tauqeer Bibi, and Dr Bushra Ijaz.

Guest Speaker Session

The Department of Periodontology, under Head of Department, Prof Dr Farzeen Tanwir, also organised a Guest Speaker Session at the Bahria University Health Sciences Campus (BUHSC).

Dr Zaheer Hussain Chachar, Assistant Professor and HoD at Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine, was invited to address the audience, comprising 3rd year BDS students and faculty members from various departments of Bahria University Health Sciences Campus.

Dr Zaheer enlightened the attendees on the fundamental principles of Implantology, shedding light on the different eras and phases of implant evolution and sharing clinical and theoretical insights, backed by the latest research in dental implant techniques.

The session also featured a presentation of clinical cases related to implant surgery performed by Dr Zaheer himself, proving highly beneficial, especially for the attending students.

Following the informative lecture, the students engaged Dr Zaheer with various queries concerning dental implants, which he addressed in detail.

BUDC Principal Prof Dr Kashif Naqvi, along with other esteemed faculty members, commended Dr Zaheer Hussain Chachar for his enlightening session. In recognition of his valuable contribution to BUHSC (K), Dr Zaheer was honoured with a shield of appreciation.
