KARACHI: The administration of NJV Government Higher Secondary School Karachi hosted a large-scale Smile and Safety Preventive Health Camp, led by a dedicated team from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) Jamshoro, in collaboration with NJV Alumni and with support from Colgate.

Established in 1855, NJV holds the honor of being the first public school in Sindh and the site of the first Sindh Assembly session after Partition. Against this historical backdrop, the health camp combined education and preventive care, reinforcing the school’s enduring legacy of leadership and community impact.

Focus on preventive healthcare

The health camp addressed crucial aspects of student well-being, including:

  • Oral screening and oral hygiene instructions
  • Hand hygiene lecture and live demonstration
  • Harassment awareness (good touch and bad touch)
  • Women’s hygiene education

More than 1,200 students from different age groups participated in the camp, receiving both practical demonstrations and structured guidance.

Oral health interventions

During the oral screenings, dental experts from LUMHS developed individual treatment plans for students with dental issues. Those requiring further care were referred to dedicated dental clinics offering special discounted consultations as part of this community outreach initiative.

Leadership and collaboration

The initiative was organized by Dr. Sana Mirza, Deputy Director Student Affairs at LUMHS Jamshoro, and executed in close partnership with NJV Alumni. With Colgate’s support, the program highlighted the importance of collaboration between academia, alumni networks, and private partners in promoting preventive healthcare at the community level.

Building awareness and confidence

By combining oral health, hygiene practices, harassment awareness, and women’s health education, the Smile and Safety Camp fostered a holistic approach to student well-being. Organizers stressed that preventive awareness at an early age empowers students to lead healthier, safer lives and strengthens community resilience.
