KARACHI: The Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) has resumed issuing tax notices to dentists across Karachi, prompting concerns within the dental community over the tone and timing of these communications. In response, the Pakistan Dental Association (PDA) Karachi chapter has proactively engaged with the SRB leadership to address the situation, seeking a cooperative approach to tax compliance that balances regulatory requirements with fairness and understanding.

Recently, numerous dentists in Karachi received tax notices via email from the SRB. Many recipients expressed unease due to the stern language used in these communications, with some notices even sent to dentists already registered and compliant with tax regulations. This has caused confusion and anxiety among practitioners, especially small and solo dental clinics.

In light of these concerns, Prof. Dr. Navid Rashid, President of PDA Karachi, held a constructive meeting with SRB Chairman Dr. Wasif Ali. During the discussion, Dr. Wasif demonstrated understanding and immediately initiated an internal review of the notice issuance process to ensure fairness and accuracy.

Clarifications and Guidance Provided:

  • For Dentists Registered and Compliant: Those filing and paying taxes as required are advised to respond to notices confirming their compliance, with no further action necessary.
  • For Registered Dentists with Zero Filings: Dentists registered but not filing returns or paying taxes are encouraged to make a nominal payment of approximately PKR 3,000 to demonstrate compliance and resolve notices.
  • For Non-Registered Dentists: Immediate registration with SRB is urged to avoid penalties and legal consequences.

At PDA’s request, SRB provided a list of dentists who are registered but currently filing zero returns. Recognizing the sensitivity of this issue, PDA has formally requested SRB to temporarily halt sending further notices to these practitioners. PDA will take responsibility for engaging with these dentists directly, encouraging them to start filing returns with a minimum payment amount as a step toward compliance.

To facilitate dialogue and ease tensions, PDA Karachi has also requested SRB to halt further notices temporarily across the board. This pause aims to provide PDA the opportunity to reach out to non-compliant dentists, encourage registration, and promote voluntary compliance through education and support.

PDA Karachi and SRB are committed to continuing joint efforts to foster a transparent and supportive tax culture within the dental community. Plans for further meetings with senior dental professionals are underway to establish clear guidelines and constructive cooperation.

This renewed engagement builds on previous successful discussions between PDA Karachi and SRB, where both parties agreed on simplifying registration procedures, easing return filing frequency, and organizing awareness seminars to educate dentists about their tax obligations.
