KARACHI: The Basic surgical skills workshop at Baqai Dental College provided undergraduate dental students with a structured, hands-on learning experience designed to strengthen their foundational surgical competencies. Organized by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the workshop offered targeted training in instrument identification and handling, aseptic protocols, incision techniques, suturing methods, flap principles and safe soft-tissue management — ensuring students gain the skills required for upcoming clinical rotations.

The workshop was led by HOD Assistant Professor Dr. Mehak Anis, along with Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali and Assistant Professor Dr. Seherish Khan, and supported by registrars Dr. Ammar, Dr. Monis and Dr. Rahul. Their supervised approach allowed students to learn through live demonstrations, guided practice and immediate technical feedback, reinforcing both confidence and competence.

Core skills students practiced
• Instrument identification and proper ergonomic handling
• Aseptic technique and infection-control protocols
• Basic incision planning and execution
• Suturing techniques including simple interrupted and continuous patterns
• Principles of flap design, retraction and soft-tissue preservation
• Clinical decision-making and preparedness for supervised surgical rotations

Faculty ensured each skill was taught with clarity, clinical rationale and safety emphasis. Their expertise in oral and maxillofacial surgery helped students understand not only how a procedure is performed, but why each step matters in achieving predictable, patient-safe outcomes. This approach enhances trust, authority and real-world readiness — core pillars of responsible surgical education.

Why workshops like this matter

Early exposure to supervised surgical training helps dental undergraduates develop stronger hand skills, reduces procedural anxiety and promotes adherence to clinical standards. By mastering surgical basics at this stage, students enter their clinical rotations better prepared to assist, observe and eventually perform procedures under supervision, supporting improved patient safety and institutional training quality.

The Basic surgical skills workshop underscores Baqai Dental College’s commitment to high-quality dental education, practical skill-building and a patient-centered clinical culture.
