KARACHI: Highlighting the effectiveness of high-fluoride gel treatments in preventing dental caries, the Department of Community Dentistry of the Baqai Dental College (BDC) recently organised a workshop aimed at educating second-year BDS students about such cures.
Such treatments represent professional dental procedures that employ a concentrated fluoride solution, administered by dentists or dental hygienists. The utilisation of fluoride gels has become increasingly prevalent due to their effectiveness.
The session commenced with an inaugural lecture by Prof Dr Asghar Ali Shigri, who gave a comprehensive presentation covering a spectrum of topics, including the significance of fluoride, various forms of professionally-applied fluoride, and the proper procedures for administering fluoride treatments.
He also highlighted the benefits and potential side effects of fluoride use, emphasising the process of applying professional fluoride gel. Special attention was given to the effectiveness of topical fluoride application across different age groups, particularly among those at moderate to high risk of dental issues.
Subsequently, students were directed to the phantom head lab, where they engaged in practical demonstrations of the application process. This hands-on approach allowed students to individually execute each step under the guidance of Assistant Professors Dr Samreen Mazhar, Dr Mehwish Bano, Dr Raza Abidi, and Dr Wajiha Anzar.
