QUETTA: Oral cancer impact was the focus of a profound session at Bolan Dental College Quetta, where Dr. Zarmina—under the guidance of Prof. Nabiha Farasat, head of the Department of Oral Pathology—explored the psychological, social, and economic burdens patients endure. This weekly lecture series reinforces BDC’s commitment to comprehensive cancer care.

Dr Zarmina opened the lecture by emphasizing that oral cancer is more than a physical disease—it inflicts lasting emotional trauma, including anxiety, depression, and isolation. She detailed the stages of grief, noting that denial often delays diagnosis and worsens outcomes.

Economic hardship featured prominently as families face mounting treatment costs and lost income, pushing many into financial distress. Social stigma compounds these challenges, fracturing relationships and community support.

Holistic care approach

Dr Zarmina advocated for a multi‑domain treatment model that includes:

  • Psychological counseling to address anxiety, depression, and grief
  • Financial guidance to help manage treatment expenses
  • Social reintegration programs to rebuild patient support networks

Attendees left the session with a renewed commitment to treat oral cancer patients with empathy and collaboration across departments. The lecture served as a timely reminder that true healing combines clinical expertise with compassion, trust, and interprofessional teamwork.
