JAMSHORO: Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, has taken another important step toward strengthening patient-centred dental care by delivering an advanced pre-conference workshop focused on nitrous oxide conscious sedation, a technique increasingly valued for managing pain and anxiety in dental settings.

Held as part of the 6th International Dental Conference, the workshop reflected a growing recognition that modern dentistry must address not only clinical precision but also patient comfort—particularly for children and individuals with dental anxiety. By combining structured academic discussion with live demonstrations, the session offered participants a realistic view of how conscious sedation can be safely and effectively incorporated into everyday practice.

Rather than limiting the discussion to theory, the workshop placed strong emphasis on clinical decision-making, covering patient selection, safety protocols, and risk assessment. Participants were guided through real-world scenarios that highlighted how nitrous oxide sedation can enhance cooperation, reduce procedural stress, and improve overall treatment outcomes without compromising safety.

The academic programme was led by Dr Shady Ahmed Moussa Aly, an internationally affiliated consultant in pediatric dentistry, who shared global perspectives on sedation standards and best practices. His session was complemented by Prof Dr Kashif Ali Channar, Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at LUMHS, who brought an interdisciplinary lens to sedation safety, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between specialties.

Behind the scenes, the success of the workshop was driven by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at LUMHS, whose faculty ensured both academic depth and smooth execution. Senior leadership at the Faculty of Dentistry also played a supportive role, underlining the institution’s commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.

With strong participation from house officers, postgraduate trainees, faculty members, and practicing clinicians, the workshop highlighted a clear demand for structured, hands-on training in dental sedation across Pakistan. The positive feedback and active engagement throughout the session underscored its relevance to contemporary clinical challenges.

As dentistry continues to evolve toward more compassionate, patient-focused care, initiatives like this reflect LUMHS’s role in shaping a workforce that is not only technically skilled, but also confident in delivering safer and more comfortable dental treatment.
