KARACHI: In commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, students from Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) in Karachi recently took part in a groundbreaking workshop focused on Pakistan Sign Language (PSL) for Dentistry.

This collaborative initiative between FJDC and the Pakistan Association of Deaf (PAD) introduced the first-ever PSL book designed specifically for dental professionals.

The workshop, hosted at the PAD head office, aimed to revolutionise dental care by fostering inclusivity. Participants, including students and house officers, engaged in a comprehensive training session, acquiring essential PSL skills.

The newly released "Pakistan Sign Language Book for Dentistry" served as a valuable guide, covering basic greetings, communication intricacies, and enhancing understanding of the unique concerns and emotions of hearing-impaired patients.

Volunteers who participated in the workshop expressed satisfaction with the power of non-verbal communication. Immersed in a new language, they gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by non-verbal and hearing-impaired individuals in society.

Scholars and faculty members were invited to volunteer for future training sessions, scheduled to take place at the clinical campus. These periodic workshops aim to further enhance volunteers' command of PSL.

This marks a promising beginning for inclusive dental care in Pakistan, as dentists strive to bridge communication gaps and deliver compassionate treatment to a marginalised and voiceless segment of society.
