ISLAMABAD: HBS Medical & Dental College has reinforced its role as a forward-looking academic institution by delivering an intensive training program that placed emerging dental technologies at the center of clinical education. The session focused on laser-assisted dentistry and VELscope®-based oral cancer screening, offering participants a practical understanding of tools that are redefining modern dental care.

Designed as an interactive learning experience, the program brought together faculty members, clinicians, and postgraduate trainees to move beyond theory and engage directly with technology-driven practice. The emphasis remained firmly on skill development, clinical judgment, and evidence-based application—areas increasingly critical for today’s dental professionals.

The laser dentistry component was led by Prof. Dr. Joharia Azhar, whose session highlighted how laser technology is transforming soft-tissue procedures through improved precision, reduced intraoperative bleeding, faster healing, and enhanced patient comfort. Participants were given hands-on exposure using animal models, allowing them to safely practice techniques while developing confidence in laser handling and clinical decision-making.

Alongside this, a live demonstration of VELscope® technology illustrated its growing importance in the early identification of oral potentially malignant disorders. As Pakistan’s first DRAP-registered oral cancer screening device, VELscope® was presented not merely as a diagnostic tool, but as a preventive strategy—enabling earlier referrals and potentially life-saving interventions in a country facing a high burden of oral cancer.

The initiative, held under the leadership of Principal Prof. Dr. Shazia Nawabi, reflected HBS’s broader educational philosophy: preparing dentists who are not only clinically competent, but also technologically literate and prevention-focused. By embedding advanced tools into structured academic training, the college continues to narrow the gap between innovation and day-to-day dental practice.

Such programs underscore a growing shift in dental education—one that prioritizes minimally invasive care, early diagnosis, and real-world readiness. For participants, the session offered more than technical exposure; it provided a glimpse into the future direction of dentistry in Pakistan, where technology and clinical excellence move forward together.
