KARACHI: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) has organized a two-day hands-on workshop on Exodontia to strengthen the clinical competencies of dental practitioners in tooth extraction procedures and the management of extraction-related complications.
Conducted under the institute's Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD-20) programme, the workshop was facilitated by Prof. Arshad Mahmood Malik, Dean of HBS Dental College, Islamabad.
The training programme provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of exodontia, beginning with the history and evolution of tooth extraction techniques and progressing to detailed discussions on dental anatomy and its clinical significance in extraction procedures.
Participants received instruction on individual tooth anatomy, root morphology, root curvature and root angulation, with emphasis on how these factors influence treatment planning and extraction outcomes.
A significant portion of the workshop focused on pre-surgical assessment and clinical decision-making. Prof. Arshad highlighted the importance of obtaining a thorough patient history and conducting systematic evaluations, including physical examination, extraoral and intraoral assessments, radiographic interpretation and relevant laboratory investigations.
The workshop also addressed the assessment of furcation involvement and demonstrated methods for measuring furcation depth, enabling participants to identify conditions that may complicate extraction procedures.
The second day was dedicated to practical sessions and hands-on exercises designed to replicate challenges commonly encountered in clinical practice. Participants were trained in the appropriate use of extraction instruments, including elevators, forceps and instruments used in managing impacted teeth.
Prof. Arshad also demonstrated the clinical applications of various elevators, including Coupland, Cryer's and angular elevators, explaining their indications and techniques of use during different extraction procedures.
The hands-on sessions included supervised tooth extraction procedures on patients, providing participants with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in clinical settings and seek guidance on managing procedural difficulties and complications.
According to IADSR, the workshop concluded with active participation and positive feedback from attendees, reflecting the increasing demand for structured, skills-based continuing professional development opportunities in dentistry.
The institute said such training initiatives remain central to its mission of advancing postgraduate dental education and strengthening the quality and safety of clinical dental practice in Pakistan.
