MIRPURKHAS: The smile care community dental camp at Lal Mandir in Mirpurkhas marked a historic moment for community healthcare and social unity. Organized by the Pakistan Association of Dental Students (PADS) in collaboration with Muhammad Dental College, Ibne Sina University (ISU) Mirpurkhas, the camp combined oral health awareness with interfaith harmony.
Spearheaded by Memoona Siraj, 3rd-year dental student at Muhammad Dental College Mirpurkhas, and co-event head Dr. Nirmal Singh, House Officer at Fatima Jinnah Dental College, the initiative reached more than 250 patients, providing free consultations, medicines, toothpaste, and mouthwash. The event was warmly hosted by the Pooj Lal Sahib Hindu Panchayat, symbolizing inclusivity and respect for heritage.
A mission of oral health and unity
The core objectives of the camp were twofold: to strengthen ties between hindu and muslim communities and to address the growing oral health crisis in Mirpurkhas. Volunteers from Muhammad Dental College, Bhittai Dental College, and other institutions highlighted the risks of poor oral hygiene, with particular focus on the harmful use of betel nut and areca nut, both strongly linked to oral cancer.
Speakers also stressed the critical link between oral and systemic health, reminding participants that a healthy mouth contributes to overall well-being.
Strong community support and expert participation
The initiative was supported by American Dental Clinic, Platinum Pharmaceuticals, Bryon Pharma, and Protect Company. Chief guests included Dr. Seeta Ram Kishan, a respected gynecologist and community leader, and Dr. Essa Laghari, chief dental surgeon at DHQ Hospital Mirpurkhas.
Their presence underscored the importance of preventive healthcare and community-driven initiatives. Over 25 volunteers from Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, and Karachi contributed to the camp’s success.
A message of equality through healthcare
The organizers emphasized inclusivity as the key driver of the camp. “If we work together as one, we can achieve much more. Oral health remains one of the most overlooked aspects of healthcare, and this camp was our initiative to educate the local communities of Mirpurkhas on its significance in combating the rise of deadly oral diseases in the region,” stated Dr. Nirmal Singh and Memoona Siraj.
The event concluded with a buffet lunch hosted by the panchayat and certificates of appreciation for volunteers, celebrating both the spirit of service and brotherhood.
Lasting impact
By holding the camp within the mandir, the organizers sent a powerful message of equality and collective responsibility for public health. This landmark initiative not only addressed urgent dental health needs but also demonstrated how healthcare can bridge divides and unite communities.
