JAMSHORO: The Institute of Dentistry at Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS) successfully conducted a hands-on workshop titled “Separated Instrument Retrieval Under Dental Operative Microscope”, recently. The event brought together postgraduate trainees and faculty to advance practical competence in microscope-assisted endodontics.

The workshop was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Arshad Hassan, a senior endodontist whose clinical experience and methodical teaching guided participants through live demonstrations and step-by-step clinical workflows. The program focused on core principles and practical techniques for managing separated instruments in root canals under magnification.

Key learning objectives, techniques covered

  • Identification and management of separated instruments: Systematic approaches to locate and assess fractured file fragments within the canal.
  • Importance of magnification and enhanced illumination: Use of the dental operative microscope to improve visualization and decision-making.
  • Access refinement and ultrasonic troughing techniques: Practical demonstrations of conservative access modification and ultrasonic strategies to expose and retrieve fragments.
  • Prevention strategies to avoid instrument separation: Best practices in instrument handling, glide path management, and torque control.
  • Clinical decision-making in retrieval vs bypassing: Criteria for choosing retrieval, bypassing, or alternative management based on case complexity.

The workshop coordinator, Associate Professor Dr. Mehwish Memon, managed academic planning and ensured an organized learning flow. Operational and on-ground arrangements were overseen by Dr. Jazib Memon, whose logistical support enabled smooth execution of the session. Participants observed close-up techniques and engaged in hands-on practice, gaining practical confidence in procedures that are widely regarded as technically demanding in endodontic practice.

A highlight of the event was the presence of Prof. Dr. Feroze Ali, Dean of the Dentistry Department at LUMHS, who emphasized the importance of innovation, precision, and continuous professional development. Certificates were distributed to participants in recognition of their commitment to advancing clinical skills.

The workshop represents a focused effort by LUMHS to promote evidence-based endodontic practice and competence in dental operative microscopy across Pakistan. By combining expert-led demonstrations with hands-on training, the event aimed to elevate procedural proficiency and ultimately improve patient outcomes in complex endodontic cases.
