QUETTA: A rare and clinically challenging case titled “Endodontic Management of a Taurodontic Mandibular Second Premolar with Four Canals — Without CBCT or Microscope” was recently presented at Bolan Dental College (BDC) by Dr Sunaila Naz, PGR-IV in the Department of Operative Dentistry. The case offered a valuable glimpse into complex root canal anatomy and highlighted the importance of sound clinical acumen in the absence of advanced technology.

A unique anatomical challenge handled with precision

Taurodontism in mandibular second premolars is an unusual developmental anomaly, and the occurrence of four canals in such teeth is extremely rare. Despite not having access to advanced diagnostic tools like CBCT or dental operating microscopes, Dr Sunaila managed the case using conventional methods—demonstrating the critical role of tactile sensitivity, periapical radiographic interpretation, and clinical expertise in delivering effective endodontic care.

Her work emphasized that excellent clinical outcomes can still be achieved through foundational training and sharp observational skills, especially in resource-constrained healthcare environments like Balochistan.

Endorsement of practical skills, basic clinical knowledge

Following the presentation, the Principal of Bolan Dental College praised the Operative Dentistry Department for promoting high-level academic discussions and advanced case-based learning. He underscored the relevance of basic clinical knowledge, consistent practice, and hands-on training in developing competent dental professionals.

The Principal noted that overreliance on modern gadgets should not overshadow the value of mastering conventional techniques, especially in provinces where technological access remains limited.

He also thanked the respected faculty members for attending the session and extended special appreciation to Dr Sunaila and the Operative Dentistry Department for their continued efforts to enhance the learning culture at BDC.
