JAMSHORO: The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), Institute of Dentistry, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), successfully conducted a simulation-based workshop titled “Managing Medical Emergencies In Dental Practice”. The initiative, held under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kashif Ali Channar, marked a milestone in advancing dental education through hands-on emergency training.
The event opened with recitation of Qura'an, followed by a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahzad, Chairman OMFS, who emphasized the urgent need for structured emergency preparedness in dentistry. Participants began with a pre-test assessment to establish baseline knowledge, before embarking on an intensive training program.
Dr. Kashif Ali Channar delivered the opening scientific session on Emergency Toolkit & Common Errors To Avoid, offering practical strategies for dental professionals. This was followed by Dr. Rabia Anis, who led a session on Communication & Teamwork In Emergencies, underlining the importance of effective collaboration during life-threatening events.
Five immersive simulation stations
The highlight of the workshop was its five dedicated simulation stations, covering:
- Syncope and hypoglycemia
- Anaphylaxis
- Epilepsy
- Chest pain and cardiac arrest
- Asthma
At each station, participants engaged in real-time emergency scenarios with trained actors (OMFS residents), applying theoretical knowledge under pressure. A distinguished faculty panel, including Prof. Dr. Suneel Kumar, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahzad, Dr. Aftab Kumbhar, Dr. Bashir Jalbani, Dr. Vishal Lohana, Dr. Ram, Dr. Ali Raza, Prof. Dr. Kashif Ali Channar, Dr. Ishrat, and Dr. Aneel, provided guidance, constructive feedback, and expert debriefing.
A structured post-test and debriefing session reinforced clinical reasoning, communication, and teamwork, ensuring measurable learning outcomes. Faculty members stressed that this landmark initiative sets a precedent for integrating simulation-based learning into dental curricula nationwide.
Participants praised the workshop’s hands-on approach, expressing enthusiasm for future series to expand training in other high-risk areas of dental practice. Special acknowledgment was extended to the LUMHS administration, the organizing committee, volunteers, and the Skills Lab staff at the OSPE Centre for their pivotal role in the workshop’s success.
This event reflects LUMHS’s growing commitment to innovation, patient safety, and excellence in dental education, equipping dental professionals with the confidence and competence to manage medical emergencies effectively.
