LAHORE: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has extended the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program by one year, from four to five years, with the introduction of a new modular integrated curriculum.
The decision was made at the 48th meeting of the UHS Board of Studies in Dentistry, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore.
The current curriculum, in place since 2005, will be replaced by a framework developed by a steering committee led by Prof. Sarah Ghafoor.
The new curriculum features vertical, horizontal, and spiral integration, incorporating professionalism, ethics, research, and leadership skills.
Clinical rotations and basic life support training will also be emphasized in the new curriculum. UHS Vice Chancellor stated that the update will enhance international recognition of Pakistan's dental degree and will be submitted to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council for formal approval.
