LAHORE: The University College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD), Lahore, under the banner of the University of Lahore (UOL) and in association with the International Federation of Medical Student’s Association (IFMSA), recently arranged a research hackathon event.
Community members collaborate to solve problems in hackathon events. Most are meant to bring researchers from various career stages and backgrounds together to create shareable solutions to problems of common interests.
The event was arranged for the students in which they were empowered to come up with new ideas specifically to counteract the vaccine hesitancy and other barriers that prevent mass immunization against COVID-19.
Students from various medical colleges participated in the event with their supervisors. The participating teams were from Lahore, Sargodha, Peshawar and other cities of Pakistan. The event was divided into 2 phases, i.e., research proposal and research conduction & presentation, respectively.
The team from the University College of Dentistry (UCD) includes Nirmeen Raja Safdar, Fahad Saqib, Fatima Hussain, Maham Rafi and Mir Abdul Wahab of BDS second year and their mentors Dr Muhammad Hassan, Dr Arooj Ul Hassan and Dr Obaid Bajwa.
The two-day event comprised of presentations on the topic ‘Mass Immunization Against COVID-19’. The UCD students explained all the possible root causes of vaccine hesitancy in the general public and other possible causes that have led to reduced vaccination in the country.
Prof. Dr Rehan Qamar, Principal, UCD, commended the participants on their efforts and appreciated their enthusiastic approach towards the research projects at such a young age and so early on in their academic stage.
UCMD is now looking forward to Phase 2.
