LAHORE- The pre-conference workshops of the 1st UHS International Dental Conference remained well-attended. The workshops included diversified areas of dentistry including those of maxillofacial surgery, restorative and esthetic dentistry, pediatric dentistry, dental hypnosis and sedation, oral and maxillofacial pathology, composite and porcelain laminate veneers, advanced endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, forensic odontology, molecular biology, and dental and medical education.

Workshop on “Paediatric Endodontics-Guidelines and recent updates” was conducted by Dr Mostafa Nabil from Egypt at the Islamic International Dental College, Islamabad. In his lecture, Dr Mostafa elaborated on various pediatric pulpal conditions including the latest filling materials and techniques, management of endodontic problems of immature permanent teeth, and application of the latest principles in pediatric endodontic management. Hands-On training, as well as a Q&A session, followed the discussion.

Workshop on “Digital Evolution of Orthognathic Surgery” was conducted by Dr Eduardo Meurer from Brazil and Prof Dr Riaz Ahmad Warriach at the Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore. In his lecture, Dr Eduardo discussed virtual treatment planning, virtual surgical planning, analog to digital evolution, 3D assessment of soft tissues, use of cutting guides, and wafers made by 3D printing. Prof Warriach shared his views on orthognathic surgery. The workshop was followed by a hands-on training session and a small group discussion.

Workshop on “Step-By-Step Ceramic Laminate Veneer Restorations” was conducted by Prof. Sadullah Üçtaşlı from Turkey at the Faryal Dental College, Lahore, Dr Sadullah elaborated on ceramic laminate veneers, diagnosis and treatment planning, color reproduction principles, shade selection and latest ceramic materials, and cementation techniques and protocols. It was followed by hands-on training and Q&A session.

Workshop on “Diagnosis and Management of Oral Soft Tissue Defects (Harvesting connective tissue graft)” by Dr Ghassan Habash from Palestine was conducted at the Multan Medical and Dental College, Multan. Dr Ghassan explained the etiology and classification of soft tissue defects, diagnosis, treatment techniques, harvesting connective tissue grafts, coronally advanced flaps, as well as different techniques used for the management of soft tissue defects around the teeth and implants. It was followed by hands-on training and Q&A session.

Workshop on An Innovative approach to lower incisor intrusion was conducted by Prof. Torun Ozer (Turkey) at de’Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore. Prof. Torun discussed challenges faced during treatment of difficult deep bite cases, induction method, deduction approach, sectional mechanics, and continuous arch mechanics. A hands-on session was organized later, which was followed by a Q&A session.

Workshop on “Matrix Selection and composite injection molding technique in posterior teeth” was conducted by Dr Abdelrahman Ahmad Tawfik Ali (Egypt) at Margalla Institute of Health Sciences, Rawalpindi. Dr Abdelrahman elaborated modern cavity design, composite placement and application techniques. This 5 CDE hours workshop was followed by hands-on session, concluded with a Q&A session.

Workshop on Odontogenic cyts and tumors, Squamous Cell Carcinoma assessment and neck dissection was conducted by Prof. Sibel Elif Gultekin (Turkey) and Prof. Nadia Naseem (UHS) at University of Health Sciences Lahore. Prof. Sibel discussed updated classification of Odontogenic cysts and tumors and diagnostic pitfalls.  Prof. Nadia elaborated CAP protocols for HNSCC and diagnostic pitfalls. The lectures were followed by live microscopy and slide analysis session.

Workshop on The free gingival graft-Science and technique was conducted by Dr Nader Hamdan, from Canada, at Akhtar Saeed Medical & Dental College, Lahore. Dr Nader discussed keratinized tissue and its loss around implant and teeth, evidence based indications for the epithelized free gingival graft surgery, surgical techniques for harvesting, transplanting and stabilizing an epithelized free gingival graft and management of common complications. The lecture was followed by a hands-on session and Q&A session.

Workshop on Periodontal pocket reduction procedures was conducted by Prof. Jagjit Singh Dhaliwal, from Brunei Darussalamm at Bakhtawar Amin Medical & Dental College, Multan. Prof. Jagjit discussed rationale and indications for periodontal therapy, osseous respective surgery technique, principles of biological width and treatment of gingival recession. It was followed by hands-on training and Q&A session.
