KARACHI: A highly specialized CME-accredited workshop on separated file removal under the Dental Operating Microscope (DOM) was successfully conducted at Dow Dental College (DDC), DUHS, recently. Organized by the Department of Operative Dentistry, DDC, in collaboration with Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry, this workshop attracted significant attention from the dental community, given the complexity and importance of separated instrument retrieval in endodontics.
The hands-on workshop was facilitated by Prof Dr Arshad Hasan, Head of Operative Dentistry at Dow Dental College, with Dr Javeria Ali Khan and Dr Samia Ali serving as co-facilitators. The event saw overwhelming response, with all seats filled well before the registration deadline, reflecting the dental fraternity’s growing interest in mastering advanced clinical techniques.
Separated file retrieval: a key endodontic challenge
Separated file removal is among the most challenging procedures in clinical dentistry, often determining the prognosis of root canal treatment. Recognizing the need for hands-on training in this skill, DDC provided participants a unique opportunity to learn under expert supervision in a fully equipped simulation environment.
The event began with an opening address by Principal DDC, Prof Dr Naresh Kumar, who commended the efforts of the organizing team and emphasized the importance of continuous professional development in dentistry. This was followed by shield and certificate distribution among the organizers and chief guest.
Dr Arshad Hasan then delivered an insightful lecture on the principles and protocols of file retrieval under magnification. His lecture generated strong engagement and a vibrant Q&A session with the participants, underscoring the relevance of the topic.
State-of-the-art hands-on training under microscope
After refreshments, the workshop moved to the phantom head simulation lab, where three microscopes were set up for live demonstrations and practice.
- Dr Javeria Ali Khan and Dr Samia Ali guided participants on staging and canal exposure using plastic blocks.
- Prof Dr Arshad Hasan demonstrated the actual file retrieval technique using the BTR Pen loop device by Cerkamed (Poland) on specialized training blocks, developed exclusively for this workshop.
Participants appreciated the real-time experience of performing file retrieval under a dental microscope, a skill increasingly required in complex endodontic cases. The session provided not just technical training, but also confidence-building and mentorship in a congenial learning atmosphere.
The workshop concluded with extremely positive feedback from the attendees, who expressed their gratitude to the leadership and faculty of Dow Dental College for organizing such a valuable clinical learning experience.
