KARACHI: The Department of Dental Education at Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC) successfully organized an interactive workshop titled “Enhancing Clinical Assessment Skills: Mini-CEX and DOPS.” The session focused on improving the quality of workplace-based assessment in dental training through evidence-based teaching and practical engagement.

Facilitated by Dr. Rooha Sultan, Director Dental Education at JMDC, the workshop introduced participants to the principles, structure, and implementation of Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) and Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) — two globally recognized tools used to assess clinical competence in real-time settings.

Empowering educators with modern evaluation tools

Throughout the session, participants engaged in role plays and educational videos that demonstrated the process of conducting effective assessments and delivering constructive feedback. This hands-on approach ensured that attendees not only understood the theoretical framework of Mini-CEX and DOPS but also gained practical insight into their application in everyday clinical teaching.

Promoting reflective learning and professional growth

The participants appreciated the session’s interactive design and noted significant improvement in their understanding of structured assessment, feedback mechanisms, and competency-based education. Many highlighted that such workshops strengthen faculty capacity, improve student evaluation systems, and promote reflective learning — aligning with JMDC’s commitment to academic excellence and patient-centered education.

The workshop concluded with positive feedback from attendees, who emphasized its relevance in building a more transparent and standardized approach to dental education assessments.
